Is CAR UNDERGLOW legal in the UK?
UNDERGLOW IS COMING BACK, BUT IS IT LEGAL?
Short answer yes, but only following strict rules that are governed by the UK Law of The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989.
There are no laws prohibiting fitting of Vehicle underglow/ Vehicle neon lighting systems. You can look at the documentation linked above to read the rules and regulations to have a better understanding before you jump into the underglow phase.
WHAT COLOURS AREN’T YOU ALLOWED TO USE?
This rule doesn’t just apply to undeglow, but any blue, red or green LED lights on the windscreen, washer jets or number plates could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice. This is to not mistake your car as an emergency vehicle.
BLUE
RED
GREEN
You cannot have any light emitting from the rear of the vehicle. Exceptions include: Tail lights, Indicator Lights, Reversing Lights & Number Plate Lights.
You cannot have RED at the front of the Vehicle.
Flashing Lights can not be used while the vehicle in motion, Except indicators or lights on emergency breakdown vehicles.
Because of these Strict Rules set out by the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, we at Luminescence would advise you not to use our underglow kit while in motion, but use it when stationary. It is fully legal to show off your underglow lights stationary and it's safer.
IS IT A PROBLEM IF YOU CAN SEE THE LED DIODES?
Yes, this is one of the big problems with underglow! Incorrectly installing underglow kits so that you can see the LED Diodes can cause drivers to be dazzled or drawn to the lights, therefore lapse of concentration in their driving. We highly suggest you make sure your underglow LEDs are emitting a “glow” effect on the floor without seeing any of the LED Diodes. If you cannot hide the LED Diodes from display, you can buy rubber strip hiders from our store (here) to put in front of your LED Strip to block the view of the LED Diodes from other people's views.
